Maun Branch

Background and history

The Maun Branch of BirdLife Botswana was started in 1999. Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta, one of Botswana’s Important Bird Areas, and the branch activities are focussed on this area and Lake Ngami, also an IBA.

Many of the members of the Branch are citizens involved in the safari industry as professional guides, and a significant number have been trained by BirdLife Botswana as specialist Bird Guides.

BirdLife Botswana assists with training and marketing these guides, and in return they regularly contribute information to the BLB database.

The Maun Branch organises a regular monthly programme of activities for its members and this includes filmshows, talks and field outings. These are also open to the general public and are part of general awareness raising of the importance of birds and our work.

The Maun office is located in the Old Okavango Research Centre premises in Disaneng Ward, Maun. This site, for those not familiar with it, is in the easternmost corner of the Maun Educational Wildlife Park, and is reached through its own gate near the eastern corner of the park. For more details please contact the Maun Representative, Pete Hancock at telephone 686-5618, 74654464 or e-mail birdlifemaun@botsnet.bw.
